SunSprint 2006 - Frequently Asked Questions

How does the day run?
Everyone should get a copy of the Friday and Saturday schedule before the event. The event will follow this schedule and any changes that are made will be well publicised.

Where do we get parking permits from?
Parking permits can be obtained from the scrutineering room.

What is the scrutineering procedure?
Two members from each team will be allowed to take their car through scrutineering. They are to line up outside the allocated scrutineering room with their car ready to be scrutineered at the nominated time. They will then be called on to enter the scrutineering room and begin the process. During the scrutineering process the cars will get their team number.

What is the race track procedure?
Only two members from each team are allowed to enter the race track area. Each team is to ensure that they are ready to race and at the marshalling area three races before their own race. (The races and the teams required at the marshalling area will be called over the loudspeaker). The cars will be weighed before entering the track area to ensure no changes have been made and each team will be given their "egg". The team will then proceed to an allocated area inside the race track area where they will wait until they are called to the start of the track.

Please ensure that your team:

1. Steps only on the marked areas of the track. These areas have extra support under them to withstand the extra weight of people standing on the track. No one is to jump over the track.

2. Returns their egg after they have raced.

Does everyone get a run on the second day?
If there are an uneven number of teams, the team that comes last in the qualifying rounds will be immediately knocked out. If there are an even number of teams every team which passed scrutineering will get at least one race on Saturday.

How are the knockouts calculated?
The knockouts are calculated using an excel spreadsheet. In the qualifying round each team is placed into a group of four. They will then race each of the other members in the group of four. The times (or distances if they don't finish the course) of these races are then recorded. The purpose of the qualifying round is only to get three times from each of the cars. This means that that if one of the groups has only 3 teams or 4 of the best teams are in one group they will not be penalised.

These teams are then ranked by firstly by best time and then by distance (for those teams that did not finish any of the races). For the knockout round the team that came first will race the team that came last, the team that came second last will race the team that came second last and so on. If there are an uneven number of teams then the team that came last will be automatically knocked out. The knockout continues until there are only four teams left.

As much as possible, the knockout is arranged so that the top four placing teams in the qualifying round will reach finals if they win all their races.

How are the finals calculated?
The top team from the qualifying round will race the fourth team in the qualifying round 3 times. The winner of these races will go through to the grand final and the loser will go through to third. The second and third teams will also race 3 times. The winner will go to the grand final and the loser will go to the race for third. The grand final and the race for third will both be raced 5 times.

The novice finals will also be raced the same way. The top four novices that progressed the furthest in the knockout will be entered into the novice finals. If a novice team makes the non-novice finals then they will not complete in the novice finals. The next placing novice car will be chosen to enter into the novice finals.

How many teams will go to the nationals?
The top three teams will go to the nationals. A wildcard team will also be chosen. They may also have the opportunity of going to the nationals if there is an extra place.
