Schools program

Deep space picture
The Outreach Centre for Sciences draws upon the resources of a world-class university to put together a number of presentations available to schools throughout NSW. The shows utilise materials and equipment not readily available to science teachers, resulting in spectacular presentations with a proven ability to amaze any audience and stimulate an interest in science. Importantly, this is achieved within the framework of the Board of Studies, NSW School curriculum. Presentations can be tailored to cover particular subject requirements. In all presentations, students have the opportunity to directly interact with young scientists from UNSW.

Starlab Planetarium

The Starlab Planetarium is an inflatable dome that allows students to observe the night sky at any time of the day or night. A young astronomer from UNSW leads students through the night skies, answering questions on constellations, planets and other astronomical phenomena. This presentation aims to support Core Content Outcomes 4.9 and 5.9 of the NSW Science Syllabus, Stages 4-5 or Outcomes from The Cosmic Engine unit of the NSW Physics Stage 6 Syllabus.

Chemistry in Action

Drawing upon the resources and expertise of the School of Chemistry, this show covers a range of concepts, from colour changes and simple reactions through to the behaviour of atoms and equilibrium. Chemistry in Action aims to increase awareness and understanding of chemistry through a highly active presentation of chemistry experiments that allow for fun and audience participation. This show is ideal for motivating students from Years 9-10 to choose chemistry in their senior studies.

Arcs and Sparks

Electricity is a power source used by many yet understood by few. Arcs and Sparks is both spectacular and informative, demonstrating novel applications of static, DC and AC electricity. The content of this show is adapted to suit the age and level of knowledge of the audience and investigates a range of concepts to illustrate the awesome power of electricity. Only available on UNSW campus.

Chaos Science

This show is a multi-disciplinary introduction to the many facets of science and technology. Chaos Science explores a range of concepts including liquid nitrogen, the science of energy and flight, and chemistry. The demonstrations are aimed at improving understanding of the physical processes that occur all around us in everyday life.

Women in Science

This program provides a chance for girls to meet and interact with female science students, researchers and other graduates, to provide positive role models and encourage girls to consider a career in science.

Campus Tours

Students visit many of the facilities on campus at UNSW, lead by science students or recent graduates. These tours give students a feel for what it is like to live and study at university. They are also exposed to the nature of scientific research and laboratories within the University.

Incursion or Excursion

All programs run by the Outreach Centre for Sciences can be held at either your school or at the University. School groups visiting the University can incorporate a campus tour with any of the other programs offered. Please feel free to discuss what you would like to incorporate into your program. Extra activities may attract an additional cost.

Costs and Bookings

Presentations by the Outreach Centre for Sciences are priced at $5.00 per student. Please call the Outreach Centre for Sciences on (02) 9385 7311 or fax on (02) 9385 7920 for all bookings and enquiries. You will then be sent a confirmation of your booking.

Terms and Conditions

Presentations are generally of 50 minutes' duration but can be adapted to suit period times.

Starlab requires a minimum audience of 20 and a maximum of 25.

Sessions should follow on from each other with the exception of breaks for recess and lunch. Outreach services require a minimum of 75 students for a session at schools (3 sessions in Starlab).

If Year 11 or 12 groups cannot meet minimum session size requirements, an exception can be made providing there is at least one session held on that day that does meet requirements. It is suggested that small senior groups attend shows with junior groups. An extension can be added to the end of the show for seniors.

Schools will be issued with a tax invoice once exact numbers are finalised.
