2007 Carrick Citation Awards - Science:  In 2007, the Faculty of Science was once again successful receiving two Carrick Citation Awards for Outstanding Conttribution for Student Learning.  TheScience awardees were:
  • Associate Professor Jacquelyn Cranney, Dr Sue Morris, Dr Branka Spehar, Dr Ben Newell: For engaging first year students by personalising the large class experience and promoting life-long learning skills
  • Professor Alan Crosky, Ms Belinda Allen, Professor Mark Hoffman, Professor Paul Munroe: For creating a bridge between material engineering and real world applications: Engaging students from multiple backgrounds

ISSOTL - Australasian Vice Presidency remains at UNSW:  In July 2007, Michelle Kofod (Science) and Jan Mclean (LTU) were appointed as Australasian Countries Regional Co-Vice Presidents for the International Society of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (ISSOTL). This position was previously held by Dr Kathy Takayama who has since left UNSW to take up a position at Brown University, USA. Further information on the ISSOTL society is available at their website.

2006 Carrick Associate Fellowship -Dr Jacquelyn Cranney from the School of Psychology, was one of eight academics from throughout Australia to have received a 2006 Carrick Associate Fellowship.  These Fellowships are highly prestigious and are awarded to outstanding scholars who are respected advocates for excellence in excellence in learning and teaching in higher education. Jacquelyn's project is on "Sustainable and evidence-based learning and teaching approaches to the undergraduate psychology curriculum".

Science Staff Receive Carrick Citation 2006  -Five staff members from the Faculty of Science were among 17 UNSW staff honoured for their Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning by the Carrick Institute for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education. Nine Citations in total were awarded to UNSW as part of the 2006 Australian Awards for University Teaching. NSW and ACT awardees were presented with their citations at a ceremony on 8 August in the John Niland Scientia Building at UNSW.
 
Science awardees were:
  • Mr George Hatsidimitris - For displaying leadership in the development of exciting and engaging learning and teaching spaces and online multimedia resources in physics.
  • Dr Noel Whitaker, Dr Will Rifkin, Dr Helen Dalton, Ms Michelle Kofod - For providing leadership through a collaborative approach to development and implementation of policy curriculum change, and best practices in teaching assessment, evaluation and Professional development.

Local Meetings and Events:
  • International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (ISSOTL) 2007 was held at the UNSW on the 2nd - 5th July 2007.  This event ws attended by approximately 400 international participants. Futher details, including abstracts from the conference are available at:  ISSOTL2007
  • Sydney basin Network of University Science Educators (SNUSE) held a Forum - From Teaching Practice to Scholarly Publishing on the 21st July 2006. A compendium from the days events is now available: SNUSE Compendium
