SNUSE

Sydney-basin Network of University Science Educators (SNUSE)

Background

SNUSE was formed in 2004 to bring together academics interested in Learning and Teaching in Science to establish a collaborative group in the Sydney basin. This group was formed with representatives from the University of New South Wales, University of Sydney, University of Technology, University of Western Sydney and Macquarie University. It is envisaged that this group would be similar to the Effective Learning and Teaching Conferences and networks already established in Brisbane and Perth.

Aims

Within the context of Science learning and teaching the aims of this group are to:
  • Create a forum for discussion of issues and share strategies in learning and teaching in Science
  • Increase educational communication and collaboration in science learning and teaching between the universities.
  • Promote educational research and community in Science and
  • Enhance the teaching of Science and raise the profile of teaching among our academic colleagues.

It is envisaged that the group will:
  • Establish support networks for academics and students (honours and postgraduates) undertaking research in Science learning and teaching
  • Establish collaboration in inter-university projects:
    • collaborate to apply for research funding
    • collaboration with other equivalent interest groups
    • reduce the perception of competitiveness between universities
  • Increase the profile of scholarly teaching:
    • increasing dialogue about teaching
    • boost research into the practice
    • shifting perceptions of learning and teaching
    • adding value to and give acknowledgement for scholarly teaching
  • Examine methods of implementation for learning and teaching strategies and
    policies
    • examine ways of reaching staff at the ground level
    • investigate ways to gain support of heads of school, deans, etc.
  • Provide opportunitities to address issues and challenges commonly faced by all academic institutions
  • Host a forum to address specific Science learning and teaching issues
    and use the outcomes
    • to develop a resource and/or apply for research
      funding
  • Examine mechanisms to influence educational policy
  • Create and share resources for the enhancement of Science education.

Meetings

It is intended that meetings will be held at least twice a year and it will be circulated amongst the participating universities.

SNUSE Forum - From Teaching Practice to Scholarly Publishing - 21st July 2006

SNUSE hosted their inaugural forum - From Teaching Practice to Scholarly Publishing on the 21st July 2006, at UNSW, in preparation for the International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (ISSoTL) 2007 conference.

The purpose of this forum is to promote collaborations and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) among university educators in Science and related disciplines within the Sydney basin. The day involved workshop topics such as research methods, funding opportunities, how to get published and fostering collaborations and will provide the opportunities for lecturers in the Sydney region to:
  • introduce the scholarship of teaching and learning to those new to the field; and
  • develop strategies and opportunities for reflection, review and dissemination of projects for those who have been investigating their students' learning.
