Background
Since S2 - 2004, the University has used the UNSW CATEI forms and process (previously processed by EAA) for course and teaching evaluations. In S1 - 2007, support for CATEI was taken over by Institutional Analysis and Reporting Office (IARO) and can now be accessed through myUNSW to approved users, in both online and printed version. The following contains advice and details for the implementation of this new CATEI process essentially for the Faculty of Science.
Science Specific CATEI Forms
The Faculty of Science's EdSquad have developed Science specific CATEI forms to enable consistency in the reporting process across the Faculty. Schools are requested to utilise the following forms when reporting on CATEI:
The information collected from these reports is used to inform the Dean and Associate Dean (Education) on the learning and teaching experiences of our students and produce Faculty and School CATEI summaries and report on the Faculty's performance in the Learning and Teaching Performance Indicators.
Faculty Reports
In the following reports, EdSquad have amalgamated the student evaluations of undergraduate courses for each school or program and compared this with General Education, First year, large classes and the Faculty as a whole.

*HOSs are asked to report on the Teaching evaluations they have received from (and discussed with) individual teachers in that session. According to the EBA and CATEI, teachers are required to be evaluated on their teaching (and to meet with their supervisor/HOS) at least once per year
Details
Overview
- Courses (Form A) are to be evaluated at least every 2nd running of the course (assuming it is offered every year).
- Teachers (Form B - D) are to be evaluated for at least one course at least once a year (teachers nominate the course from which their teaching is to be evaluated in consultation with their Head of School (HOS)).
- The forms are designed to give a very broad overview of the teaching within UNSW and courses/teachers may well have to be further evaluated by the school.
- Teachers should have the opportunity to meet with HOS to discuss teaching issues (probably integrated with the Career Development Scheme annual meeting).
Specifics
- Either Online or Paper-based forms (A-D) can be used. Course evaluations (Form A) are normally carried in weeks 11 or 12 or as near as practicable. Teacher evaluations (Forms B-D) may be carried as appropriate.
- CATEI Course (Form A) and Teaching Evaluations (Forms B-D) are to be administered by the school/department CATEI coordinator and definitely NOT by the teachers (for that course) themselves (there is the option to use Student Course Committees).
- Administration of CATEI within each school involves:
- For Online Evaluation
- For Paper-based evaluation
- Scheduling the CATEI evaluations on the IARO CATEI portal (accessible from myUNSW - https://my.unsw.edu.au/).
- Printing sufficient numbers of the CATEI evaluation forms for that teacher/course evaluation.
- Distribution to and collection (of the CATEI forms) from the students.
- Sealing (of the CATEI forms) in an envelope and delivery to IARO (Attn: Paul Scimone)
- Form A:
- Data summaries and written comments on the course evaluation will be made available (via the IARO CATEI website) only to the course convenor.
- Data summaries (only) will be available to the School CATEI coordinator, the relevant HOS and the Faculty CATEI coordinator.
- Forms B, C & D:
- Data summaries and written comments on the teaching evaluation will be made available to the individual teacher (only).
School Coordinators for CATEI
The school level CATEI coordinators (shown in Table 1 below) have been registered in the Online CATEI system (by the Faculty CATEI coordinator). These people are responsible for scheduling the CATEI evaluations (for the school) and printing the Paper-based versions if required. Below is a list of the School CATEI coordinators for the Faculty of Science.

*Schools are requested to advise the CATEI coordinator (A/Dean (Education)) of any changes to the School CATEI coordinators.
Purpose
- To be the administrative link between the School, Faculty and IARO, thereby facilitating the control and coordination at a School level of the CATEI process.
- To be the point of contact for academic staff within the school.
Duties
- Coordinate and document which courses are to evaluated for a session.
- Schedule CATEI evaluations and print Paper-based forms if required.
- Coordinate evaluation administration (including distribution and collection) of Paper-based evaluation forms, if required.
- Despatch completed Paper-based evaluation forms to IARO (Attn: Paul Scimone), if required.
Support for CATEI Coordinator
- Instruction Session covering the Online CATEI interface
- Technical support from IARO (Paul Scimone) relating to the Online CATEI interface
- Online CATEI User Manual.
- Faculty CATEI coordinator (A/Dean (Education)
CATEI Questions
Note:
- Q1 - 7 & Q 10 in Form A and Q - 6 & Q10 in Forms B - D are the UNSW-wide and cannot be changed by the schools.
- The Faculty of Science have specified questions, set as the default, for Q8 & 9 in Form A, and Q 7 - 9 in Forms B-D. Alternatives can be selected from a pull-down menu by the schools, however we encourage schools to use the Faculty Specific Items to allow comparisons over time and across the Faculty.
